9.3 Components Used For a 100-Mbps Connection

Physical Medium


Starting with the right hand side of the block diagram in the figure, we find the physical medium used to carry Ethernet signals between computers. This could be any one of the three 100-Mbps media types. You make a connection to the medium with the medium dependent interface, or MDI. This is an 8-pin twisted-pair connector or fiber optic connector in the 100BASE-T system.
